Ontology in Practice

Thane said that his approach to spiritual studies came under the category of Ontology - "the science of Being." He taught generalized principles based upon the unity of being (drawing on Aristotle and many others) that could be applied to specific circumstances in order to bring about a change in perception.

Because the world we see is colored by our state of mind, an alteration in our perception has the uncanny effect of changing the world we live in. As Thane said many times, "a change in worldview changes the world viewed."

This approach relies essentially on actual practice; thus, we could refer to it as "applied ontology," as contrasted with more theoretical and academic endeavors that are purely intellectual in character. Some of these are fascinating, as in Umberto Eco's book, Kant and the Platypus, but they are not designed to lead the reader to greater freedom or personal transformation.

Thane's students continue to work with the principles he taught. The undiminishing usefulness of these principles even after many years of practice bears witness to the efficacy of Thane's instruction. Articles about Ontology or that bring an ontological perspective to a particular issue are listed below. Let us know what you think about these articles.

Heather Williams, H.W., M.

A student of Thane for many years, Heather has melded her understanding of ontology with her love of art and created a unique ministry. The author of "Drawing as a Sacred Activity," she shares a "drawing report" on a regular basis that is a delightful means for exploring ontological views of identity. You can visit her at

Ontology (lit. "science of being") as used on this site describes the application of specific principles related to being and consciousness to break through perceived limitations and effect personal and social transformation. Fundamental principle is that of oneness and universality.

This site does not address questions of ontology in applied computer applications or artificial intelligence. But the metaphorical connections can be interesting to explore. This Google Search will keep you busy for hours.
